Dia Carabajal, Candidate For New York State Assembly calls for Onondaga County Legislature & Executive to Protect County Employees

Auburn, NY - Today, Dia Carabajal, Democratic Nominee for New York State Assembly in the 126th district, is calling for the Onondaga County Legislature to protect Union members and to try to preserve as many jobs as possible.

On Tuesday, September 1st the Onondaga County legislature gave the County Executive the power to lay off as many as 250 county workers to help balance a budget ravaged by the coronavirus pandemic. Normally when jobs are cut, the legislature votes on the elimination of specific positions. This time, lawmakers have allowed the executive to decide which jobs to cut and how many.

“Politicians often tout how many jobs they bring to the area but they seem to forget that protecting the existing jobs is just as important,” said Carabajal. “I stand with the Civil Service Employees Association, and if cuts need to come in the form of layoffs, then serious conversations need to be had with each of the parties involved. Executive branch, Legislative and the Union."

Carabajal is a career educator with a long history of community service; serving on both the Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education and the Auburn City Council. Dia Carabajal is the Democratic Candidate for the New York State Assembly in the 126th District. She is also on the Working Families line.

The 126th district covers the southwest portion of Onondaga County including the towns of Camillus, Skaneateles, Lafayette, Otisco, Spafford, Elbridge and Marcellus.
